What is your chosen email provider and why?

Possible Duplicate:
List of (popular) Webmail services

Why do you prefer your email provider over others (feature-wise)?

  • I use Gmail (Google Mail) and I love it, for a few reasons:

    • Very user-friendly and easy to use
    • Lots of space (7.5GB)
    • It has free features that many other email providers offer for a charge, such as mail forwarding, POP3/IMAP/Exchange access, etc.
    • Organization is built-in, with labels and filters
    • Search is very good (well, it's Google)

It's very easy to adapt Gmail to whatever you want to do with it. For example, I have a central Gmail account to which all my other email addresses forward. I have also set up the "send mail from" feature, so that I can not only receive email sent to other accounts, but also send email from those accounts.

  • I use Gmail through Google Apps because:

    • It lets me use my own domain name for my emails, so I don't have to be @gmail.com
    • I can access it in a wide variety of ways - POP, IMAP, Web, mobile
    • It allows me offline access (via Google Gears, but eventually HTML5 I believe)
    • Loads of space so I don't need to worry about that
    • Lots of other useful features like forwarding, send as, labs apps...
    • It also seems to run a lot faster than Hotmail or Yahoo Mail in my experience.

How do you delete a Stack Exchange account (for a specific site)?

For example, if you committed to a site, and then found out that it's not really what you're looking for.

  • This is covered by Jeff Atwood here as of July 2009

    How to delete your account:

Edit your profile to say "please delete me" so we can confirm your ownership of the account.

Obtain your user page URL or numeric user ID. This is linked from the top of every page of the site, when you are logged in.

Email the support address linked at the bottom of every web page on the site. Where it says "contact us", click that. In your email, you MUST include your user page URL or user ID so we can find your account.

I would imagine this will eventually change to some kind of automated process though once it becomes a hassle.

What is the correct capitalization of "gmail"?

What is the correct capitalization of the webapp "gmail"? In plain text on the Google site it is referred to as Gmail, but the logo suggests GMail. I have also seen on this site gmail or even gMail.

Is there a canonical capitalization?

  • It is newspaper editors and journalists that sweat the most over details like this, so I think this is off topic.

That said, a quick search of Google News shows most (all?) news outlets writing "Gmail"

The logo has a capital M solely because they wanted to fit an envelope icon into the logo.

Jared Harley : Of course, if you pay attention to my local news station, I use an Iphone. \*shudder\*
  • According to the help documentation, it's "Gmail":

  • Internally at Google we have flip flopped between GMail and Gmail, but we've settled on the latter. Gmail it is.

  • Since it was even called Google mail for a long time in a few places, I'd say Gmail!

Whats the best way to handle and monitor multiple email accounts without using desktop applications such as outlook?

I have many email account on different domains, on gmail, yahoo, hotmail, aol, and my company email account.
I don't like applications that download my emails on my PC such as outlook, i like to manage them through the browser.
What i am doing now that i open a new browser window and open all my email account in its tabs and keep always this window open.
Is there a better way, can you share you experience.

  • Simply setup each mail service to forward your mail to one primary email address. For example I forward everything to my gmail.

On each mail service, I will try to mark all incoming as read and forward a copy to my main mail services. That way if I ever need to reply from a specific domain I still can.

Amr ElGarhy : and you reply all from gmail?
Brian R. Bondy : Yes unless it's very important that you reply from a specific domain, then in that case you can login to the site in those hopefully rare cases.
jfoucher : Gmail also allows you to send email using another address, making it appear as though it came from your other address to your recipient.
  • You can use Gmail to manage your emails. Gmail can send & receive emails from other services (like Yahoo,Live or any Pop3 mail). in Gmail just go to settings>Accounts and Imports and start importing your mails.

You can use your original mail to reply emails, also you can tag your emails to organize better

ErJab : But GMail allows you to add only 5 POP3 accounts.

Post bookmarklet on wordpress.com

I have a blog on wordpress.com and would like to post a bookmarklet I have written there. However, wordpress.com breaks the URL string. Is there any way I can post it?

For example, if I enter a link in HTML view as

when I press publish the link is changed to:

  • JavaScript is not allowed on wordpress.com blogs due to security reasons. This means that the following will not work (among others): <script> tags; javascript: links; and events such as onclick.

In fact, that's the reason I switched from wordpress.com to blogger.com. Your only Wordpress option is to either host it yourself, or find some hosting solution that allows JavaScript.

If you decide to host it yourself, JavaScript will work out of the box (tested on latest version only), and you can find more information here.

If for some reason you cannot use JavaScript with your hosting, you could try to see if it supports the Inline JavaScript Plugin [via], which will enable JavaScript. Wordpress.com does not support this plugin.

How do I import an iCal feed to twitter on an as it happens basis?

I have an account on twitter that I use for saying "what I'm doing." Some of my iCal feeds already know what I'm doing and I don't want to have to do double entry and record that event twice.

Is there a service (not unlike twitterfeed.com, which at the moment doesn't support iCal) that will post updates to twitter from an iCal feed on an as-it-happens basis?

Google books: search within library?

Is there a way to search only books available in nearby libraries in Google Books?

  • No. Google books stores one copy of every book (that they have gotten to). They do not publish information about which library they got that book for nor which library's have that book. Your best bet is to just call up local libraries if you come across a book you like. If they don't have it they may be able to tell you who does or even get it on a library loan.

  • No, Google does not display that information. However, the Worldcat webapp http://www.worldcat.org/ will do what you want. In their own words:

WorldCat.org lets you search the collections of libraries in your community and thousands more around the world. WorldCat grows every day thanks to the efforts of librarians and other information professionals.

You can see if your local libraries are indexed by searching for your library or town here.

What online social networking website would work for a language study group?

I already organize a foreign language study group on meetup.com, but I know that not everyone knows about meetup.

What event or group promotion websites can you recommend that I can use to find new members? Are there any sites that are specifically tailored to language study groups? (In the same way that goodreads has a section specially tailored for book clubs)

  • Google Wave is the most flexible social networking system I've yet seen. Indeed, it is so flexible that not even Google appears to know how to make best use of it yet. The Linguists of Google Wave public wave will give you a practical example, but do understand that this is a new realm to most of the participants. It is very hard to tell if this is an idea slightly ahead of its time or will be relegated to the dustbin of history.

Applications for players of World of Warcraft

What web applications for World of Warcraft players do you know? Do you use them? What do you think about them?

  • Armory is obvious one.

I also like Be Imba. It rates your character's gear and gives you advice which instances or raids to join to get a better one.

    From Fczbkk
  • I liked tweetcraft for because it integrated with twitter, lets your friends know when you're playing and where you are in the game.

  • Because Blizzard is very focused on security and making sure the game is fair for everyone, there aren't many applications that actually plug into World of Warcraft. Most of the stuff you will find is online sites. (elitistjerks.com)

I for one like Rawr. Basically, it grabs your gear info from the armory. Then you give it a list of other items that you have in your inventory/bank. Press a button and it gives you what it thinks you should change in your gear to get the highest DPS, health, or whatever you choose.

It is a very neat program that I use constantly to figure out potential upgrades.

Where can I find the syntax list in Wolfram Alpha for Math and Science Subjects ?

Google is able to do simple to medium mathematical calculations but Wolfram Alpha is like Mathematica online. What I would like to do is test the limits . Such as what syntax is defined and what is not.

From the examples they have given , lets pick the Engineering Section. It is lacking in my opinion. Based on the mathematical functions like solving ODE's, simple addition and so forth ... I cannot understand why they do not have more Engineering examples.

Case

Carbon Steel

This returns physical, mechanical and thermal properties (inclusive of thermal conductivity).

But where can I find the extended syntax to know what I can add or not add ?

For example I only got this by trial and error.

NPS 1 inch steel 25ft

I know this engine is possible of doing more than I am seeing. I just want to know where is the push more button/section.

From web app phwd
  • Unfortunately, Wolfram Alpha is not like Mathematica and lacks a formal syntax. Trial and error is the method you use to interact with it. This shortcoming is its most serious flaw and the source of much criticism. (By the way, there is often a "more" link at the upper right of result "pods".)

When using Gmail with multiple accounts, should each account have a spam filter?

I currently have Gmail set up to read mail from several different accounts, most of them are other Gmail accounts. I'm wondering what the best way to set up the spam filters for these accounts is. Do I set up the spam filter on each individual account, or bypass the spam filter on each of these accounts and only enable it on the main account?

It's my understanding that Gmail uses (at least something similar to) Bayesian filtering, where it will learn from the messages you mark as spam. My email accounts are set up so that they get similar email. So for example, I have a personal account, a work account, and one that I use to signup for services.

I'm not sure if the spam filter is smart enough to also look at the to field for it's algorithm. If it was, then I think the obvious choice is to use a single spam filter on the main account.

Use spam filter on main account only:

  • Pro: There's only one spam box to check for false positives.
  • Con: Might degrade the spam filtering logic since now it's getting a bunch of different types of email messages.

Use spam filter on each individual account:

  • Pro: Might improve spam filtering logic since each email address is going to get similar mail.
  • Con: If someone tells me they sent me a message and I don't see it, I have to login to that account and manually check the spam filter.

Which method would you recommend? (Did I make any false assumptions? Any other pros/cons?)

  • I would let one account handle the spam filtering for all of your accounts. I don't believe there's much benefit for having each account handle its own spam. I think Gmail is aware of the destination address of each incoming mail and having identical spam emails (with only the destination address changing) will strengthen the spam algo just as much as if it were single emails sent to multiple accounts.

Regardless of how much (more) it might improve the spam algo, you should choose the solution which best improves your workflow. I would just go with the first option (spam filter on main account).

FYI: I use Gmail to process email from 12 accounts across 7 domains each with spam being primarily handled by my main gmail account. :)

How can I automatically share certain tasks in Remember the Milk?

Remember the Milk makes it really easy to share individual tasks, but how can I make it automatically share certain groups of tasks (e.g., I'd like it to automatically share tasks tagged #groceries with my girlfriend).

  • Haven't tried it myself, but maybe you can create a Smart List for your tag and then share it with the appropriate contact.

Bernhard Hofmann : -1 for suggesting *he* try something. We all want accurate and complete answers in the stackexchange sites. You'll get +1 from me if you try what you suggested, and report back that it does/doesn't work :)
jhwist : I'm not sure I can follow your reasoning, since a) I don't have the problem and b) there is no way for me to test this, since I don't even have a contact (on rmt) to share tasks with. That's really the first time ever that I get a -1 for suggesting a possible solution (on any of the stackexchange sites). Wtf?
mbrochh : That's really a bit harsh... If he suggests something that no one else (especially the question starter) thought of before it is a valuable answer. If people were to test all their solutions before posting them, most questions would stay unanswered... i mean... isn't this why we can vote up or down working / not working answers? That way the correct "guess" will turn out naturally...
marco.ragogna : @Bernhard Hofmann Suggestions are better than nothing sometimes, wrong suggestions probably not. Therefore I suggest that if you found the "guessed" solution does not work you can set -1, otherwise do nothing. :)
Bernhard Hofmann : On advice from others I have removed my -1. Thanks for helping me learn better behaviour / critique. For that I have up-voted the comments that led to me removing the down vote. :)
    From jhwist
  • Though that would be awesome - You cannot share a Smart List. You can share a List , or numerous tasks but not a Smart List.

Here is how I would do it.

    Search for your tag

    tag:grocery

And either select all your task you want to Share and just share that way (I think you already know this way) The other way, which I use it , is the List. So move your tasks tagged with grocery to a List called Grocery

    alt text

Then sharing it with allow your friend to change items in your list.

There is a use case for this that worked for a couple.

My husband and I use a shared RTM list for our grocery shopping. Each of us can put items on the list when we think of it from either work, home or via our smartphones and whoever is doing the shopping always has an up-to-date list. It works especially well as we often stop in to pick up one or two items, but we can also see what else needs to be bought. We use the 'priority' function to separate our items into the general areas of the supermarket, to make it easier to sort through a long list.

As an added bonus, if we are shopping together we can split up and tackle the shopping from different ends of the supermarket. We 'complete' each item on our phones as it goes in the trolley so we don't double up or miss anything. It probably looks a bit strange to other people when we stand in the vegetable section staring at our phones, but it really works well.

Best open source traffic analysis tools/api.

Hello Members,

I would like to know the best Open source websites/apis which analyze the mail log, ftp log, traffic, web server log, and website visit.

  • Piwik is the best I know of for website analytics:

Piwik is a downloadable, open source (GPL licensed) real time web analytics software program. It provides you with detailed reports on your website visitors: the search engines and keywords they used, the language they speak, your popular pages… and so much more.

Piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics.

Piwik is a PHP MySQL software program that you download and install on your own webserver. At the end of the five minute installation process you will be given a JavaScript tag. Simply copy and paste this tag on websites you wish to track (or use an existing plugin to do it automatically for you) and access your analytics reports in real time.

In laymens terms, you can check out who has been visiting your page, when, how and why. If you don't speak english, fear not. Piwik is available in more than 30 languages (and growing).

What makes Piwik unique from the competition:

Real time web analytics reports: in Piwik, by default reports are generated in real time. For high traffic websites, you can choose the frequency for reports to be processed (more info) Piwik's features are built inside plugins: you can add new features and remove the ones you don’t need. If you are a developer, you can easily build your own web analytics plugins! you own your data: because Piwik is installed on your server, the data is stored in your own database and you can get all the statistics using open APIs (publishing the data in many formats: xml, json, php, csv) the user interface is fully customizable: you can drag and drop the widgets you want to display and create a report especially tailored to you!

For the other logs you mentioned, I don't know of any one tool (except for R but it has a huge learning curve for such tasks)

Jeff Epstein : My co-founder is a core team member at Piwik.org. I can fwd him any additional questions...
adatapost : Many thanks to Tal Galili and Jeff Epstein.

How do I change the default start page for Google Apps when I have admin access?

This has been a pet peeve of mine lately. A few associates of mine set up a Google Apps account to help us manage some work. All was fine until I was granted admin access. Now, when I log in, it goes directly to the admin dashboard as opposed to the GMail interface for my account.

There is often little reason for me to administrate anything, and I usually log in to check email or a doc. This extra step is annoying.

I tried searching the options everywhere I could think of. Is there a setting I have overlooked?

  • I don't think you can change the start page if you log in from http://www.google.com/a/example.com, but you can bookmark http://mail.google.com/a/example.com and log in there, and you'll be taken directly to your inbox after login. From there, your different Google Apps are available in the upper-left.

  • I don't think there is a way to do this. However, if you follow their setup instructions, they will tell you to setup subdomains for specific services. So for example, mail.example.com will allow users at your domain to login directly to their mail. You do this by setting up a CNAME record which points to ghs.google.com. The complete instructions are available if you go to the administration page, then dashboard, then Email, then Change URL.

This simply makes it so when users type a domain such as mail.example.com it takes them to http://mail.google.com/a/example.com.

rifferte : You nailed it! Setting up the CNAME works perfectly. Thank you!

What web apps can help us to build support section in our company website?

We need something that have forum, online support(chat),knowledge base(or wiki),Help desk. What's best web app for this?

  • You could also just use the online support app as a knowledge base by creating articles in the style of an FAQ.

Mike Sherov : I can't upvote GetSatisfaction up enough!
Evan Plaice : +1 for GetSatisfaction
  • Also check out Zendesk. They integrate with many other web apps.

  • I believe SharePoint 2010 would be a good fit. It depends a lot on what the current environment at your company looks like.

Prestaul : I totally disagree. Besides being too general in scope and challenging to configure and maintain, SharePoint sucks as a forum and offers no chat. You are better off with a tool designed as a help desk/support forum.
    From Woot4Moo
  • I also think there are two related options: SnapABug and Olark

Both apps allow the user to chat with a live admin (assuming you are present). They both integrate with several chat apps. Although neither is a complete solution, they are both valuable dealing with customers (and offer free accounts).

Playing a youtube video or playlist on loop

I may drive everyone around me crazy but I like to listen to the same playlist or song sometimes on loop from youtube.

What is the best way to loop up a song or playlist until I get yelled by those around me and stop it manually?

I know of a couple ways:

  • Make a custom playlist which has a lot of duplicates in it, not true looping but can be a large play list
  • Copy the embed URL and append &loop=1, but this only works for some videos which allow embedding, and it is annoying to do this.

Is there an option I'm overlooking somewhere which exists inside the youtube site directly?

  • Try EndlessYoutube. Obviously it will still only work for videos that allow embedding but it should be less annoying.

  • This is Kind of hacky, and only works for single videos, but if you're using the Firefox browser, you can get the ReloadEvery plugin ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/115/ ). This allows you to set a page to automatically reload at whatever interval you like. Just go to your favorite video, start watching and set the page to reload every seconds.

  • This isn't exactly the answer you want, but possibly related - (YouTube Disco).

    If you go to http://www.youtube.com/disco

YouTube asks for your first song/video keyword, then sets up an almost endless playlist of similar songs/videos (you can then add/remove/delete/shuffle songs in your playlist)

Why does Pandora keep playing Incubus when it should know I hate it?

I've downvoted every Incubus song that has ever come on my Pandora radio and it insists on trying to keep playing more Incubus. It seems the more I downvote one song, it tries to play different Incubus songs. What is going on here and how can I train it to understand my hate for Incubus better?

  • Look at what station you are listening to. If it is a band or song really similar to Incubus, delete it and replace it with something else.

Also, you can look at your whole thumbs-up/thumbs-down history if you go to the station menu and click "Edit Station Details." That might give you an idea of why Pandora thinks you like Incubus.

Amendment: If you REALLY don't like them, get rid of any and all thumbs-up you may have done in the past for their songs.

Joe Philllips : Is there a way to tell why it decided to play incubus? I've had this station for a few years and I've upvoted and downvoted a few thousand songs probably.
Emory Bell : @sirconnorstack Sorry for the downvote, think I just ran into a bug. Had upvoted it, accidentally clicked the down button, changing it to -1, and when I tried to set it back, I was told that I had voted at least two days ago so it was locked :/
Jarrod Dixon : @Emory I'm looking into this - in the meantime, I've changed your downvote back to an upvote.
  • Pandora will "ban" an artist from a station if you give thumbs down to two of that artists songs. The only exceptions are if that artist is part of the definition of the station, or if you have ever given thumbs up to a song from that artist.

Joe Philllips : Hmm. That may be the case but I do not ever recall giving thumbs up to an Incubus song. Strange!
    From Prestaul
  • When it plays an Incubus song, click on the "Menu" button and select "Why was this song selected." That's probably as good as you are going to get. The songs by Incubus probably have qualities which are similar enough to the songs that you have Thumbed up.

I've noticed that Pandora sometimes takes the wrong path.

I've voted on well over 300 songs for one of my stations (No, really! See here), and I still find that Pandora plays the wrong kids of music. When this happens, I simply Refresh my browser and start over.

For some of my smaller stations, I will start over. Clear all songs which have been thumbed up or down, and try again. I usually have better luck the second time through because I'm more careful with which songs I select.

Web based P2P applications

Are there any safe (secure) web apps available that will allow you to do P2P sharing? Before anyone asks no i am not referring to pb or anything of that nature, however something that could be a limewire replacement in the web would be most close to what I am seeking.

  • p2p normally means endpoint to endpoint. webapps run on the server / the cloud, a user connects to the services through a browser.

so, real peer 2 peer will be a bit .. strange with browser-server.

to establish a session between end points (through firewalls) you have to have a central instance which helps to establish the connection. i do not think that this kind of help could be called "webapplication".

    anyway, some things look promising:

    • opera unite is browser 2 browser
    • websockets could be user to initiate a browser 2 browser connection
    • iirc, flash supports p2p as well (eg. http://zattoo.com transfers their video stuff via p2p flash).
    From akira
  • put.io is invite only right now but is basically a web based torrent client. Works with rapidshare links as well.

akira : but just because that service downloads stuff to its servers does not make it "web based p2p", imho. it is just cloud-storage with a nice method to fill it up :)
